Specialists
In these months since the virus hit, we have all become our own little factories of self-preservation, specialists in home decontamination and handwashing,
carrying protective kits outdoors with us, adjusting our behaviors, cognizant of not touching things and avoiding others. We ration food to avoid frequent
supermarket shopping. We stay home.
Along with our deserted cityscapes, the evidence of the transformation of our lives is on what we wear on our bodies, and measured by the 6 foot distances we keep.
Meanwhile, brave souls don suits appropriate for science fiction or outer space and descend into subways or march into hospitals and other facilities to protect the rest of us.
I hear on the radio that the Center for Disease Control reports now that the virus isn't easily spread by contact with surfaces. It's understandable that everything
was not immediately known about this disease, that it takes time for things like this to become clear. But, I don't know how long it will be before I easily grab a
doorknob or freely touch things outside my own home. I think of our country's top leadership's lies, censorship, persecution of whistleblower truthtellers, and firings,
and doubt sets in. I'm going to need confirmation of this news. Still, I finally open the mail I'd let sit to cure on a shelf by my door.
