Real-Life Experience
Just two taxis were at the curb when I emerged from Penn Station. One was empty with
a wide open door. The driver had been hanging at a food cart, and he intercepted
me. Wiry and very young, with large clear eyes, he smiled impishly to charm
me into riding with him. Where are you going? he asked. I named the cross-streets,
as I always do. For several long moments I stood by while he wrangled with his phone,
incomprehension playing across his face. Still fixated on his phone, he asked Do you
know the address? Yes, I do, I replied, and I got my heavy suitcase and travel-weary
self into the cab I'd originally headed for.
